Elinor I. “Nonie” Strong, 93, of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. Born on Aug. 29, 1921, in Brillion, she is the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Lambordena (VanHolls) Richter.
On Sept. 3, 1940, Elinor was united in marriage to Harry J. Strong, who preceded her in death. Elinor was president of the Clintonville VFW in 1952 and was the worthy matron twice for the Clintonville Chapter Eastern Star. Elinor loved playing horseshoes and cards, especially poker and May I, which she taught to all of her grandchildren. She was feisty as ever yet always lovable. Elinor was always there to lend a helping hand if needed. Her favorite saying was “My way or hit the highway!”
Elinor is survived by her children, Carol Sandberg, of Appleton, Penny (Robert) Popp, of Shawano, and Thomas “Tom” (Sandra) Strong, of Green Bay; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Elinor was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; son-in-law, Marvin Sandberg; five sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Breed Cemetery at a later date.
