To the editor:
Why would Democrats have to worry about their political signs being stolen? It happens every election cycle. It is not only unlawful to take items from private property, it also shows how malicious some people can be about stopping candidates who have opposing ideas.
During Walker’s recall election about 30 signs that promoted his recall were stolen from private property around the city of Shawano — all in one night. Mary Burke signs have already been stolen from locations around Shawano County. On the positive side, these actions only enrage the Democratic base and make them contribute more to defeating Republicans.
We can disagree about how much property tax people should pay, if public education should be cut to pay off a deficit and if we should have collective bargaining for wages and working conditions, but everyone should have the right to express their opinions. The right of free speech is in the Constitution, which the Republicans profess to support wholeheartedly.
People in Shawano County need to wake up to the fact that their democracy is being taken away by the Republicans in office. The governor and his cronies, who are being bought off by the big money of the Koch brothers, are thinking more about their futures than that of working Americans.
Something has to change and it has to happen in this next election. Vote Democratic on Nov. 4.
