Shawano Community High School junior Julia Beck saw her season come to an end Tuesday, shooting 100 at the WIAA Division 1 girls golf sectional at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken.
Beck had a 49 after the first nine holes.
“It was one of her better games,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She kind of knew it was going to be tough today.”
The coach said Royal Scot played long Tuesday.
“She just wasn’t good enough on the greens,” Kugler said. “That’s what she’s going to work on for next year.”
Kugler said he hopes making sectionals as a junior will serve as a springboard for an even better senior season.
“Will she take it and run with it?” Kugler said. “She has the opportunity. Hopefully it opens her eyes that she’s not that far away.”
Beck qualified for the sectional by shooting a 97 at the Division 1 regional Oct. 1 at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.
Notre Dame (332) won the sectional. Kaukauna (353) took second. Both will advance to the state meet Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.
Also advancing were the top three individual qualifiers. Maddy Neumeier of Green Bay Preble was the meet’s medalist with a 77. De Pere’s Megan Growt and Kaukauna’s Faith Williamson tied at 83 to take the second and third qualifier spots.
Division 2
Bonduel High School senior Taylor Diemel had a rough start and a miscue on the back nine at the Division 2 sectional Monday at Mid-Vallee Golf Course in De Pere. She finished with a 108.
“I think it was a great experience for her,” Bonduel coach Lynn Schaal said. “It’s something that she really wanted to do. I’m immensely proud of her. It shows a lot of hard work pays off.”
Struggles on the first two holes left Diemel with a 55 through the first nine holes. She managed to come in with a 53 on the back nine.
“I think in the beginning she was very nervous,” Schaal said. “The first couple, she started out rough, then she started doing a little bit better.”
Diemel shot a 97 at the Division 2 regional Oct. 1 at Irish Waters Golf Course to qualify for the sectional.
“She was excited to be there,” Schaal said. “She was pretty happy that she even made it. … I think overall she was pretty happy.”
Fox Valley Lutheran (318) won the sectional and, along with Racine The Prairie School (358), advanced to the state tournament. Milwaukee St. Thomas More’s Stanley Wang (81), Racine St. Catherine’s Sarah Busey (81) and Freedom’s Lori Meyer (81) all qualified as individuals for the state meet.
Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kayla Priebe (74) was the medalist.
