Julia R. Deterville

Julia R. Deterville, 91, formerly of Oconto, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2014, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Seymour, where she had been a resident for the past nine years. Julia was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Oconto, a daughter of the late Lee and Loretta (Merline) Deterville. Julia attended the Oconto schools and, following graduation from high school, attended Marquette University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and teaching. She continued her education at Marquette, earning her master’s degree in social work. Julia had been employed at the Milwaukee Public School System for many years. She retired in 1983. Julia was a devout Catholic during her lifetime. Her hobbies included world travel and volunteerism, including being a longtime volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation and also at St Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee for many years. She was a true philanthropist during the course of her life, always willing to help others. Her favorite charity was the Lakota Sioux Indian School. Reading and current events kept her mind sharp. Julia was always known for her great sense of humor. She also enjoyed gardening. Left to cherish her memory is her special niece/caregiver, Mary (Dan) McGuire, of Shawano. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Fred and Roc Deterville, and two sisters, Rita Naven and Loretta Lambert. Also preceding her in death are her roommate and travel companion, Dorothy Steinbrecher, and her dear friend, Muriel Woodside, and most recently, her lifelong friend and soul mate, Janet Tyson, who passed away in 2007. A memorial Mass for Julia Deterville will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Private family inurnment will take place at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, Oconto. Relatives and friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
