Nature center has busy December schedule

A Christmas open house headlines the activities at Navarino Nature Center in December. Here is a list of the programs planned during the holiday season at the center, W5646 Lindsten Road, Shiocton. • Julie Wilber will help participants paint a snowman design on a glass block from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 2. Cost for the class is $30 for NNC members and $35 for nonmembers; the cost includes all materials except brushes. Brushes needed include smaller flats and liners. Some brushes will be available for purchase. The class is limited to the first 12 people to register. • Naturalist Tim Ewing will present “Watching the Night Sky” at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2. The class will start with a short inside tour of the night sky using computer software, and then go outside to use telescopes and binoculars to view stars, constellations, planets and the moon. Program fee is $4 for NNC members and $6 for nonmembers. There is a $12 family rate. • A wreath-making workshop starts at 9 a.m. Dec. 6. Each wreath measures 24 inches. Cedar, balsam fir, red and white pine are available. Staff will assist with the wreath, and how to create a bow for the final touch. Cost for the workshop $25 for NNC members, $30 for nonmembers. The class is limited to the first 12 people to register. • The Christmas open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6. Craft stations will be set up for children to make and take three Christmas crafts and decorate Christmas cookies. Due to a donation from Thrivent, the workshop is being offered at $5 per child to cover craft expenses. • The nature center will once again be having its annual Christmas tree sale on Wildwood Road (north side of the Navarino Wildlife Area, located off Townline Road). You can select and cut your own tree. Each tree costs $20. Heights vary from 8 to 20 feet tall. Pre-cut trees will also be available at the nature center on Lindsten Road. The sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 7 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 13. Wreaths will also be available for purchase at both sites; cost is $50 each.
