Three technical fouls midway through the fourth quarter dashed any hopes for a Shawano Community High School comeback Friday, as the Hawks fell 50-33 to Seymour in a Bay Conference boys basketball game.
“I don’t think any of our players played their A-game and I did not coach my A-game,” said Shawano coach Chris Kellett, who departed the game with 51 seconds left following two technical fouls. “It was just an eye-opening experience for us this early in the season.”
It was the Hawks’ first loss of the season after a 2-0 start and evened their conference record at 1-1.
Seymour (3-1, 2-0 Bay Conference) built a 10-8 lead in the first period by clogging the paint, preventing the Hawks from utilizing 6-foot-6 junior center Zeke Gueths, who was held to four points in the game.
“They played very well defensively,” Kellett said. “We were probably the softer team tonight, and we got to give them credit.”
The Thunder led 20-13 entering halftime and 30-23 entering the final period.
Seymour coach Jon Murphy said the Hawks got frustrated in the closing quarter.
“When you are behind and clawing and scraping, it gets difficult,” Murphy said. “The foul situation helped. We were both at the double bonus, but they were the chasers.”
Kellett picked up his technical fouls in the final period, and Sajen Knueppel was issued another after he hung onto the rim. The Thunder outscored Shawano 20-10 in the quarter.
Seymour hit 22 of 30 free throws in the game; Shawano 17 of 25.
Knueppel, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, scored a team-leading 12 points for the Hawks.
Shawano senior 5-foot-10 guard Zack Sousek scored nine of 10 points in the second half. Senior 6-foot-5 forward Jack Lacy added seven points.
Seymour was led by guards Jose Alicea and Jack Murphy, who both scored 15.
Murphy said Shawano has the ingredients to for an excellent season.
“Shawano is a very good team in our conference,” he said. “If we played them tomorrow, it could be a different ballgame.”
The rivals will meet again Jan. 27 in Seymour.
