Allen G. “Sarge” McCann, 51, of Gresham, began his journey to the spirit world on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at his home.
Allen was born on Oct. 12, 1963, to Everette “Joseph” and the late Jenny (Lutz) McCann in Sparta. After Allen’s mother passed away, Allen was adopted at a young age by John and Carrie “Bea” McCann. Allen served in the United States Army for over 26 years until his retirement in 2007. On Aug. 12, 1989, Allen was united in marriage to Sandra Newton. Sandra preceded him death on Nov. 21, 2004. Lucky to find love a second time, Allen married Rebecca Waupoose at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit on Oct. 26, 2013.
Allen was a very kind and caring man who was always willing to help people. He was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved the Menominee Reservation. He was an active member of the Menominee Veterans Association and St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council. Allen was also a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
Allen is survived by his wife, Rebecca; a stepson, Kaleb (Cami Perez) Powless, of Gresham; his first wife Sandra’s children, Tammy, Julie and Scott and their families; his biological father, Joe McCann; siblings, Cheryl Campbell, of Florida, Joel Crady, of Shawano, Angie Lutz, of Stoughton, and Pamela Crady of Iowa; two adopted brothers, Steven McCann and Glenn (Beverly) McCann, both of Appleton. He is further survived by uncles, Richard Lutz, Harry (Val) Lutz, Charles (Patricia) Lutz and Donald (Sharon) Lutz; aunts, Diane Coats and Norma McCann; godfather, John Newton; special brother and sister, Ted and Terri Waupekenay; special niece and nephew, Kahkamhot and Kemewan Waupekenay; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Allen was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra; his biological mother; his adopted parents; adopted brother, Tom McCann; his grandparents, John and Anneida (Propp) McCann and David and Louise (Yund) Lutz; aunts and uncles, Frances “Fran” (Alfred) Ziese, Helen (Donald) Hansen, Louise (Byron) Householder, Edmund “Bert” McCann, Nettie (Edwin) Erdman, Donna (Jim) Hatfield, Marilyn Lutz and Joanna Lutz; as well as a sister-in-law, Beverly McCann; and mother-in-law, Jean Marie Waupoose.
A funeral service for Allen will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. The Rev. David McElroy, O. Praem, will be officiating and military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of the Menominee Nation. Visitation began at the Neopit Community Center, next to the church, on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at 3 p.m. and continues until the time of the service on Thursday. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
