There is no doubt about it. I have been missing the sewing. Somehow I didn’t realize the fact until I started sewing mission quilt bottoms and tops the past week.
So far I haven’t looked too long at my quilting table, nor the stash of fabric and patterns that reside on or near it, but one of these days it is bound to happen.
Right now I am content to spend an hour, or perhaps two, in assembling those backs. I only have one more box of fabric to measure and sew together, unless we find more somewhere at church. So I have gradually moved into sewing the blocks that were left from last year into quilt tops.
There is something about creating a useful and beautiful item out of leftover or unwanted fabric or clothing. Most of our mission blocks are cut from discarded clothing. They might be used, but they are not used up, and it doesn’t matter if it is out of style, has a stain or the buttons are missing. We can cut around the bad part and turn the rest into quilt blocks.
I am not sure how other churches do it, but we have three sizes of blocks. Our largest is 11 inches square. This year, some other area churches decided they are no longer able to do mission quilts, so they have shared their materials with us.
Right now, the quilting area at church is waiting for new flooring, but there are several of us either cutting blocks, or sewing them together, waiting for the time when they can be layered and tied at church. Then they will be going to warm those in need.
Once I get caught up on the mission quilting, and this yearning for making something a bit more creative, I will venture over to the quilting patterns. I know that I have fabric and patterns gathered together, waiting to be cut and turned into something special. Not sure for whom, or what, but I am waiting for inspiration that I am sure will come.
Meanwhile, many people are looking forward to the Super Bowl. I would be if the Packers were playing, but since they aren’t, I doubt I will even watch the whole game, just check on it now and then. I hope the Seahawks win, but that is mostly because I like Russell Wilson, and dislike the Patriots.
Another thing to tackle this time of year is tax preparation. I began organizing the papers this week. So far I don’t think I am missing anything. I know I don’t need to, but I do figure up all my expenses for the year. It is amazing how much money went to what.
It seems this is the time of winter that the blahs set in. Two different people have gotten stuck in the nearby ATV park. The park is not plowed over winter, and part of it is used by snowmobiles. Anyone going in there this time of year should be using snowshoes or cross-country skis.
Meanwhile, my best way to beat the blahs, is to keep busy. Sewing, reading, exercising and going to physical therapy is keeping those blahs away, at least for the most part.
