Boy Scout troops in Shawano County will get help from the Bonduel and Shawano Community Friends of Scouting Fundraising Campaign that kicked off Feb. 26, at Angie’s Main Café in Shawano.
“I have a soft spot for Scouting and its wonderful programs,” said Dale Vannes, chairperson of the local campaign.
He was joined by around 20 people who represented businesses in Shawano that pledged their monetary support. Sarah Graper, district director of the Bay Lakes Council’s Gathering Waters District, also attended.
“Together we can make a difference for the youth in Shawano County,” Graper said.
The goal is to raise $7,000 this year to support Scouting in Shawano County.
It costs around $183 to provide one year of quality programs for each Scout, Graper said. Shawano County has more than 200 boys in Scouts and 50 adult leaders.
Vannes was a Boy Scout, scoutmaster and a district commissioner. He has been and will continue to contact businesses and individuals for donations, he said.
“Several give annually this time of year,” Vannes said.
The campaign has already raised about 35 percent of the annual goal. Guests at the kickoff included representatives of the Knights of Columbus, Menominee Casino Resort and other organizations, as well as community members.
Four people have been helping Vannes with phone calls and visits to businesses who have donated in the past. Vannes said people have been very generous.
“We’re very fortunate here in Shawano because of the support and contributions,” he said.
There is special recognition for those that are able to support three Scouts with a donation of $500 or more. Any donation is helpful and appreciated so no youth will ever be turned away from Scouting for financial constraints.
The funds raised will help support the Bay Lakes Council Boy Scouts of America.
