Last September, my husband and I were strolling through the Merchant Building at the Shawano County Fair when we stopped at a booth that advertised a pain relief program in a new, innovative way. The brochure caught my eye because my husband was dealing with back pain off and on for years, as well as complaining about his back being “tight.”
I figured it was due to our livelihood. He occasionally treated himself by relieving the pain with a roll-on med as well as using a back brace. When it got more severe, he turned to pain medications.
The booth was sponsored by Integrated Pain Solutions (www.integratedpainsolutions.com) out of Antigo. They were advertising a branch office opening up soon in Green Bay and because of that, offered a pain evaluation, an X-ray as well as a consult, all free-of-charge if you’d sign up by filling out a brief history of your pain.
We filled out the history, took the letter home and forgot about it. A month or so later, we received a follow-up letter asking if we’d still be interested in the offer and letting us know they’d honor the proposal made at the fair.
Well, it took us yet another month to make it into the office for the first visit and when we did, we were hooked. Dr. Curt Draeger and his excellent staff made us feel completely welcome and, after the initial consult, evaluation and X-ray, he was confident that he could help my husband.
Their brochure explains exactly how and what they do. They use a high intensity laser therapy “that has a unique ability to penetrate through bone, soft tissue and muscle to deliver healing light energy to the cells of the body. It can reduce pain, minimize swelling, soften scar tissue and reset the chronic pain cycle, all while healing damaged tissues at the cellular level.”
The brochure goes on to say, “The laser Dr. Draeger uses is a Class IV therapeutic laser that was co-developed by him. Using his experiences treating professional athletes and chronic pain sufferers, Dr. Draeger worked with physicists to develop this latest generation of high intensity lasers.”
What resonated with me immediately was the drug-free, noninvasive treatment approach. However, I was still skeptical so when we got home I called a couple of people I knew that had undergone treatment at Integrated Pain Solutions. I got glowing reviews. One guy said that prior to treatment, he could not raise his arm to drive a car; he had to literally lift his arm onto the steering wheel with his other hand. After treatment, he felt no pain whatsoever. Then he said something that really stuck with me: “It’s like the hand of God, Kay, really!”
After receiving a number of treatments, plus giving my husband some “homework,” such as stretching routines, he’s seen a difference. One day, he fell and hurt his side. The next visit with Dr. Curt he mentioned that and the laser treatment that day was a beam onto his back as well as another beam located right on the spot that hurt from the fall. The pain in his side disappeared in two days.
After determining what’s wrong, Dr. Curt performs a chiropractic adjustment to loosen any scar tissue that has formed. Then the laser treatment is administered to repair damaged cells. One day, as the doctor worked on my husband, I conducted an amateur interview of sorts, for this article.
Kay: What made you decide to go into this field?
Dr. Curt: I was helped by chiropractic after sporting injuries in high school and that got me intrigued.
Kay: How long have you been doing this?
Dr. Curt: Twenty-eight years.
Kay: What kind of training did you have to complete?
Dr. Curt: Two years of undergrad plus five years at a chiropractic college.
Kay: How did you get involved with professional athletes?
Dr. Curt: A consultant submitted my name to the Olympic decathlon committee. From there they picked 40 chiropractors from all over the U.S. to participate, and out of 40 they picked two to go to Greece in 2004. Through relationship building, credibility and credentials, they selected me to accompany the Olympiads in 2004, 2008 and 2012. This next year I will travel to Rio De Janeiro with the team.
An extremely intelligent, humble, kind man (along with a great sense of humor), Dr. Curt treats his patients with compassion and integrity. He has exclaimed, “If I did my job and didn’t get you well I’d get a bad reputation.”
Because I believe so strongly that this program works, I agreed to represent Dr. Curt and his staff at a booth at the Marion Health Fair on Saturday, April 18.
