Thomas R. Tepiew, 68, of Keshena, started his journey to the spirit world on Friday afternoon, May 29, 2015, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, surrounded by family and friends. Tom was born on Oct. 4, 1946, in Keshena, a son of the late Mitchell “Monk” and Frances (Komanekin) Tepiew. He was a graduate of Shawano High School. On June 8, 1968, Tom entered the United States Army, where he served two tours of duty as a combat veteran in Vietnam. In January 1983, Tom graduated from Olero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado, earning his associate degree in alcohol and drug counseling. After earning his degree, Tom stayed in Colorado and worked as a counselor for many years before returning to Keshena. He continued his pursuit of knowledge and education, earning his NLP Masters Practitioners on Sept. 30, 1995.
On Oct. 4, 1999, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Malone. She preceded him in death in 2003.
Tom was a member of the Veterans of the Menominee Nation as well as the Valley of the Eagle Sundance Family. He very much cherished the relationships he had with his family and friends, whom he held near and dear to his heart. He especially enjoyed his crew from Perkins Restaurant who welcomed him every day when he stopped. Tom liked to fish and play golf.
He is survived by his son, Aaron Waukau, of Keshena; two grandchildren, Aaron II and Koda Waukau; and many other friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary, and twin sisters in infancy.
Traditional Native American services for Thomas Tepiew were held on Monday, June 1, 2015, at noon. Mr. Tuffy Sierra presided. Burial was in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Keshena. The Veterans of the Menominee Nation performed full military honors at the grave. Relatives and friends called at the Tepiew residence, N1040 Oshkosh Road, Keshena, after 5 p.m. Saturday, May 30, until the time of services Monday.
