To the editor:
On April 1, Wisconsin held its spring election. The town of Little Suamico had only one contested race.
Under the direction of Nikki Tolzman, clerk/treasurer, and now Deputy Clerk Sandy Pagel, we had 10 election workers for a total of 262 votes. The cost was approximately $1,505 plus the salary of clerk, a deputy clerk and a food bill, with the cost of approximately $8 to $9 per vote.
Where was our leadership when trying to keep the costs down for this very small election? When questioned at the town meeting, the response from Ms. Tolzman was, “You would not want to be the one on TV like the lady in Kaukauna.”
Our Town Board has control over how many election workers are needed, and again they failed, and thus, it’s a waste of our tax dollars.
Since January 2014, our town refuses to provide balances of accounts as was provided in 2013 at town meetings. Recently, I requested to view accounts and was refused twice. When Ms. Tolzman took over the clerk/treasurer position in January, the first thing she did was to change our town’s office hours for her convenience and not for the convenience of residents who work during the day, and now she refuses to make accommodations for requests.
We need leadership who is knowledgeable of our statutes, follows them, and provides transparency and accountability for our town’s finances.
