Changes are coming to the 2014 Oconto County Fair in a number of areas.
The 2014 fair will return to its traditional third weekend in August, Aug. 14-17, although a number of junior fair judging events take place the preceding weekend. The junior horse show will take place Saturday, Aug. 9. The small pet and cat shows and dog obedience trials will be held Sunday, Aug. 10.
The second change is the carnival vendor that will provide rides, games and food. Spectrum Entertainment will provide expanded ride special opportunities. Wrist bands are $20 and will be accepted for all rides. An advanced sale will offer $16 coupons that can be turned in for wrist bands at the fair.
There also will be a $1 midnight madness special Friday. A food donation special on Saturday offers a $2 discount on wrist bands from 1-5 p.m. with nonperishable food donations.
The fair will open with an opening ceremony presented by county veterans organizations Thursday evening.
Grandstand events are a farm tractor pull, N.E.W. 4 x 4 truck pull and demolition derby. On Sunday night, teams will compete in the Ag Olympics, which includes mutton busting, in which youngsters try to stay aboard a sheep for 8 seconds.
Other highlights are youth, open class and commercial exhibits, animal exhibits, a dairy recipe contest, youth-decorated cake auction, Jim Lenz shows, free music and dairy farm tours.
