Alfred Edward Hoffman, 88, of Green Bay, and formerly of the town of Spruce, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Grancare Nursing Center, Green Bay. The son of the late Charles and Fannie (Soukup) Hoffman was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Oconto County. He was a 1946 graduate of Oconto Falls High School and a graduate of the short course in agriculture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Alfred was married to Dorothy Rose Dietrich on Oct. 2, 1948. Alfred took over the family farm in the town of Spruce in the mid-1950s and operated the farm until his retirement. He was very active in many civic organizations, including being on the Spruce Town Board, Oconto County Board, Bay Lakes Co-op and Oconto Electric Co-op boards. He enjoyed the time he spent in the outdoors and all forms of hunting, especially deer hunting and also brook trout fishing. Alfred was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Coleman, where he was very active for many years serving on the church council, etc.
Surviving are five children, Charles (Barbara) Hoffman, of Green Bay, the Rev. William Hoffman, of Appleton, Carol (Keith) Helmle, of Little Suamico, Mary (David) Arndt, of Coleman, Julie Geiger and special friend John Tesch, of Green Bay; 10 grandchildren, Tim (Elissa) Hoffman, Mike (Dana) Hoffman, Marci (Andy) Mac Lean, Trish (Skip) Weiser, Betsy (Jason) Wijas, Amy Jo (Tony) Cannata, Andrew and Richard Arndt, Meghan Geiger and Ryan Geiger; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Hoffman, of Kelly Lake; two sisters, May Weier, of Klondike, and Marlene (Marvin) Rosner, of Pound. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dolores Dietrich, Joan Dietrich, Art (Betty) Dietrich, Leo (Claire) Dietrich and John (Judy) Dietrich; special friend Kevin Zoromski; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; brothers, Jim, Leo and Elger; and sister, Emma Stodola.
Relatives and friends called at Rhodes-Charapata Funeral Home, 235 E. Main St., Coleman, from 4-7 p.m. Sunday. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Visitation continued Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, 228 E. Main St., Coleman, from 9 a.m. until the time of services. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the church with his son, the Rev. Bill Hoffman, officiating. Interment will be in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Klondike.
