The Gillett Secondary School football team made an immediate statement Friday with a 62-0 season-opening nonconference victory at White Lake/Elcho.
The Tigers were propelled by 42 first-quarter points, including three touchdowns by leading rusher Monte Noffke and two by Akeem Bates.
Gillett coach Rick Kamps said Noffke picked up where he left off last season and ran the ball very well. Noffke rushed for 179 yards on just eight carries and scored five touchdowns.
Noffke scored on runs of 2, 24 and 5 yards in the first quarter. He followed up with a 75-yard touchdown run to start the second quarter and added another score of 42 yards to put the Tigers up 56-0 entering halftime.
Brett Milhans produced Gillett’s other rushing touchdown on a 42-yard scamper. Milhans had 94 yards rushing on four carries.
Gillett added another score late in the fourth quarter with an Alex Zeitler 13-yard strike to Evan Bubolz. Zeitler completed 4 of 6 passes for 47 yards.
The Tigers compiled 379 total yards.
“We were able to come out early and establish the line of scrimmage,” Kamps said. “We thought our line played well and executed their assignments.”
Kamps noted two players on the defensive side for the shutout.
“I thought Kody Pawlak and Milhans played extremely well from their inside linebacker position,” Kamps said. “We had several nice surprises from first-year starters on the defensive side.”
