Kelly Casper, Suring School superintendent since July 1, shared her thoughts regarding her educational philosophy and the challenges that lie ahead.
Q What personal and professional strengths do you bring to the position?
A “’To teach is to touch lives’ has been my motto my entire life. For the past 20 years, I have spent time focusing on the needs of children as a teacher, coach, department chair, elementary principal and MS/HS principal. The knowledge I gained from my experiences and education will be used to lead the Suring School District. My positive attitude, drive for success, organizational abilities, people skills, devotion to children and work ethic will lead the district in a forward direction fulfilling the needs of the future leaders—our children.”
Q What positive things have you discovered concerning this job and the school?
A “The Suring School District has given me the opportunity to lead and to move the district forward. The school is the heart of the community where students gather to learn, grow, share, participate and care. The well-maintained facility is full of friendly, helpful, hardworking staff that is devoted to the district and is eager to meet the needs of all children.”
Q How are you making the transition from Coleman, where your children attend school and your husband coaches?
A “The transition going from Coleman to Suring has been supported by my children and husband. Kevin and I have raised our family in a goal-orientated environment in which our children are accustomed to facing challenges and striving to succeed. The saying goes, “Be the best you can be.” I will no longer be able to keep my “eyes” on my boys at school, but I know I will have staff and family taking on this role. Just as I have touched lives in Coleman, Coleman staff has touched my life, and they will continue to do so with teaching, coaching and parenting my children.”
Q What do you see as the most significant challenge facing the Suring School District? How will you address this challenge?
A “The most significant challenge faced by our school is balancing the budget with a declining enrollment. As the district leader, I will work with the board of education to make sound financial decisions to meet the academic, emotional and social needs of all children within the district.”
Q Suring has scored low on previous state reports cards. Where will you focus to improve those score?
A “The district has been challenged with academic success on state testing. I will continue to support and lead the school district initiatives that include PBIS, RTI and curriculum development in Common Core and literacy. The district has invested time and money by hiring a curriculum director to help in this area. In addition to these initiatives, staff will be provided opportunities to learn and grow through professional development. Through effective teachers, we will celebrate success.”
