Doris M. Paulson passed away on Sept. 2, 2014, in Green Bay, at the age of 96. She had been residing at Nicolet Highlands in De Pere, living independently there for the past eight years. She had spent the majority of her life in Suring.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1918, in the town of How, to Leonard F. and Mary Elizabeth (Babe) Krueger Johnson. She attended Hayes Grade School and graduated from Suring High School with the Class of 1935.
It was there that she met a classmate, Kenneth Paulson, who was to become her husband. They were married in Navarino on June 7, 1941. Except for a few months in Lena, they lived all of their married lives in Suring.
She was always involved in activities of Suring Methodist Church, which her paternal grandparents had been instrumental in founding. She was active in the Sunday School, youth programs, the choir and the Ladies Aid. Since she was an excellent baker, she was often asked to bake lemon pies for socials. She provided the altar flowers for many years.
Additionally, she was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Suring Lionesses. She loved working in the hamburger stand for the Labor Day celebrations. She enjoyed baking, doing crosswords and crocheting.
Having been raised with three brothers, she was always active in sports activities. For many years she bowled on a league and then golfed until she was 93. At her new apartment, she even learned a new sport, shuffleboard, but had to give it up when she “sustained a sports injury” to her shoulder at 94.
She is survived by her three children, Eileen (Vanderwegen) Johnson, of De Pere, Bruce Paulson, of Gillett, and Marilynn Paulson, of Smyrna, Georgia.
Her grandchildren are Peter Vanderwegen (Jenny), of Oconto Falls, and Jane Liebert (Scott), of Freedom. Her three great-grandchildren are Madeline and Jack Liebert and Camryn Vanderwegen. Two cousins also survive, Mary Ellen Moede, of Suring, and Jeanette Hull, of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ken; brothers, Kenneth, Lee and Howard; and an infant brother, Irving.
Services were held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Suring United Methodist Church. Visitation began at 9:30 a.m. with the memorial service following at 11 a.m., led by the Rev. Daniel Nault. Burial of the cremains took place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Suring United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
