The village of Suring has decided against renovating its ball field for the inaugural season of the Gillett and Suring high school softball co-op program.
The Village Board on Sept. 9 decided to see the results of the first two seasons of the co-op program before making changes to its field in the village park.
The co-op agreement, approved in April for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, allows for some home games to be played in the Suring area, as long as the field meets WIAA requirements. School and village leaders determined that the field would be compliant if a fence and backstop were to be moved.
“It fits, but who will pay for it,” said Village President Jay Tousey, who estimated the renovation cost at $25,000.
School Board member Wayne Sleeter, a proponent of playing games in the Suring area, said he was disappointed by the board’s decision. School officials will move ahead with an alternate plan to play games in the town of Breed.
Baseball games are scheduled to be played in the town of How.
“I really appreciate the town of How and Breed working with the community to provide a field for the kids,” Sleeter said.
He said volunteers will work at the fields this month to prepare them for the spring sports season. Upkeep of the fields will be done mostly by volunteers.
“We’re looking forward to working with the Gillett School District to provide a competitive baseball and softball team,” he said.
