Christian “Christ” Deckert, 90, Oconto Falls, went home to join his wife and be with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at a local hospital. He was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Bellwood, Illinois, to Gottlieb and Maria Deckert.
On Dec. 29, 1945, he married the love of his life, Olga Milchner, in Oconto Falls, and together they would spend the next 68 years working side by side while loving and caring for each other daily. Christ served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and Italy. Christ and Olga owned and operated a motel in Three Rivers, Michigan, where they once hosted the prince of Japan, and in 1960 owned and operated the Sleepy Hollow in Gillett.
They moved back to Illinois in the mid-1960s. Christ worked in maintenance for the Bensenville Public School System for more than 20 years before retiring in 1983. The couple enjoyed traveling and spent their winters in Port Charlotte, Florida, for 23 years, where Christ enjoyed working as a crossing guard and interacting with the children. He was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls and a beautiful example of Christian life and witness to many.
Survivors are one son, Chris (Carmella) Deckert, Elk Grove, Illinois; three grandchildren, Christopher (Melanie), Nicole and Jennifer Deckert; two sisters, Emma Campbell, Florida; Emily Baustian, Hillside, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Eric (Belva) Milchner, Oconto Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Olga, on June 29, 2014; one son, Jeff, on Nov. 29, 2008; four brothers, Gottlieb, Henry, David and Alex Deckert; and three sisters, Sarah Deines, Emma Campbell and Emily Baustian.
Visitation was held at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls after 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, until the time of service. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Pastor Doreen Jeffers officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oconto Falls.
