Suring High School senior Brooke Gauthier was named to the first team of the All-Marinette & Oconto Conference volleyball team last week, and three teammates from the second-place Eagles (14-2) also were recognized.
Gauthier was second among Eagles hitters with 140 kills and contributed 194 service aces and 116 digs.
Coach Tonia Kruschke said Gauthier’s leadership was instrumental to the team’s success.
“She brought a passion to play her best volleyball each and every match,” Kruschke said. “She is a competitive girl who wanted to win and get the job done.
“As a senior she learned from the previous season to improve her overall skill level and be a competitive player. Brooke was also a great motivator and team leader on the floor.”
Sophomore Katie Stegeman, who led Suring in kills with 146, was named to the second team.
“She is a middle hitter who has a keen sense of what is going on on the court,” Kruschke said. “We depend on her to not only hit the ball but also as a large factor in our defense as a middle blocker.”
Senior defensive specialist MacKenzi LaMarre and junior outside hitter Az VanBellinger were given honorable mention.
LaMarre was the team leader in both service aces and digs with 56 and 282, respectively.
“She was a motivator on the floor,” Kruschke said. “One of her roles was to keep the team encouraged and fired up when things weren’t always going the best.”
VanBellinger transitioned from a defensive specialist her sophomore year to outside hitter this season. She registered 108 kills and 116 digs.
Niagara senior Shelby Borchardt was the unanimous selection as Player of the Year after leading her team to the conference championship.
Also receiving honorable mention in the all-conference voting were junior Jessica Anderson and sophomore Victoria Loberger, of Gillett, and senior Christina Jagiello, of Lena.
