Farm succession program to be offered in Lena

The University of Wisconsin-Extension will offer a program titled “Returning to the Farm” for farm businesses and families considering a multiple-generation farm business. The two-day workshop will be offered Feb. 19 and March 5 in Lena. The program is open to all farm families who want to learn about planning for farm succession. Families are encouraged to participate in both sessions. At the end of the second session, families will have completed the framework of a working succession plan. Through this program, farm businesses will determine if an existing operation is large enough to support an additional partner, uncover alternatives for the transfer of farm assets, recognize personalities and learn to work with each individual’s strengths, and write long- and short-term business and family goals. The program will offer an opportunity for farm businesses and their families to discuss issues related to farm succession. Attendees will also learn how to address major issues that can lead to failure in a multiple generation farm business, define farm business arrangements that fit a specific business, and hear the current issues and information on the tax implications of farm transfer. Program speakers are Greg Anderson, certified public accountant with Ihlenfeld, Skatrud and Anderson; George Twohig, attorney with Twohig, Reitbrock, Schneider & Halbach S.C.; Joy Kirkpatrick, outreach specialist with the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Profitability; and UW-Extension county agents. The registration fee for this two-day program is $50 per farm operation, which includes program materials, lunches and refreshments for both days. All individuals involved in the farm operation are encouraged to attend the two-day program. Returning to the Farm will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 19 and March 5 at the Lena Town Hall, 6087 Goatsville Road.
