Glenn Kevin Smoot

How sweet, how rare, to find today The quiet, even spoken elf Who holds the status hounds at bay By merely being just himself. — Murray Paddack Glenn Kevin Smoot (G. Kevin), formerly of Gillett, was born Jan. 26, 1949, in Hinsdale, Illinois, to Margaret (Patz) and Glenn W. Smoot. He moved with his family to a farm near Gillett as a child and graduated from Gillett High School. Continuing education included the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Northeast Technical College and self-study. Following military service, Kevin married Gayle Herning on May 25, 1973. He managed movie theaters and sold real estate and insurance. Kevin and Gayle lived for a time in Wausau and Rockford, Illinois, before returning to Gillett. He was a member of the Rockford Pine Tree Pistol Club, chaplain of the Rockford Area Jaycees and official, unpaid staff photographer for the Northern Illinois Chapter of the March of Dimes. Upon returning to Wisconsin, Kevin became active in the Oconto County Dairy Promotions, Gillett Civic Club and American Legion Krause Simpson Post. He was commander of the Luebke-Robinson VFW Post 8314 and past master of the Gillett Masonic Lodge No. 344. Kevin proudly served seven years as a member of the Gillett Public Library board of directors. Shortly after implementing plans to move to Florida in 2013, Kevin was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer. He died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, in Orlando, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 41 years; one daughter, Evelyn, of Florida; one brother, Gilman (Cheryl Winkler), of Minneapolis; one niece, Elizabeth; and one nephew, Justin (Phyllis). Masonic services will be held at a future date in Florida. The family was served by Golden’s Funeral Home, Winter Park, Florida.
