The Business Education Department of Brookfield East High School is a recipient of the 2014 Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award, one of only 17 individuals, businesses and organizations statewide that received this recognition by Gov. Scott Walker’s Council on Financial Literacy.
The department is led by Jason Kruse, a graduate of Gillett High School and son of James Kruse, of Oconto Falls, and the late Linda Kruse.
“I am truly honored to receive the Governor’s Financial Literacy Award on behalf of the Brookfield East Business Department,” Kruse said. “It’s great to see the importance of financial literacy being recognized at this level and it is my hope that personal finance may soon be a required course for all schools within Wisconsin.”
According to information posted on the district’s website, the business education department has sought to embed financial literacy skills for students in all of its coursework.
In the popular elective course, Personal Finance, students grow their financial literacy by assuming a desired future career and financial accountability for all aspects of their livelihood. Students demonstrate these skills by presenting an end-of-term portfolio analyzing all aspects of their financial decision making.
All recipients of the award were recognized in a ceremony at the state Capitol on Jan 28. Representing Brookfield East were Jason Kruse, Superintendent Mark Hansen and Principal Andy Farley.
The criteria to earn the Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award centered on innovative implementation, demonstrated measurable results, collaborations with partners and focus on needs-based groups.
