Eleven Oconto Falls High School wrestlers will have an opportunity to capture a sectional title on their home turf Saturday.
Five Panthers earned regional titles and six finished as runnersup Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 regional in Clintonville. All of the first-place winners were seeded No. 1 for the sectional Saturday in Oconto Falls.
“I am very happy with our results,” Panthers coach Mike Kinzinger said. “It’s the most qualifiers we have ever had, based on my memory.”
Senior Sam Konitzer (34-3) grabbed the Panthers’ first title of the regional at 126 pounds, pinning Freedom’s Evan Vosters with a little over a minute remaining in the match.
“Sam has been a vocal leader,” Kinzinger said. “He has always been a rah-rah leader. He certainly got the crowd going on that.”
Senior Dewey Krueger remained undefeated at 36-0, getting right to work, pinning Sean Murphy of Freedom less than a minute into the semifinals and dropping Seymour’s Justin Krull at 1 minute, 37 seconds to capture first place at 152 pounds.
“While Sam is a vocal leader, Dewey quietly went about his day, showing what it takes to win,” Kinzinger said.
Following a second-place finish by sophomore Bryce Ash at 132 pounds, the Panthers strung together three consecutive first-place finishes by senior Brett Ash (138), sophomore Nate Trepanier (145) and Krueger.
Brett Ash (25-4) won on a technical fall against Freedom’s Dakota Brockman, and Trepanier (34-4) shut out Freedom’s Blaz Daul 6-0.
Sophomore Mac Winkler (26-11) was the final Panthers champion, winning a 5-3 overtime decision against Jake VanGrinsven at 182 pounds.
Freshmen Bryce Peterson (106) and Noah Stary (120), senior Jake Yatso (160), sophomore Brice Delzer (170) and junior Kaleb Westcott (285) each finished second.
The individual sectional tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oconto Falls High School. The top three finishers at the sectional will advance to the state meet in Madison.
Oconto Falls finished second in the regional team standings to Freedom, which advanced to the team sectionals along with the other regional champions across the state.
