Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood announces its first event of 2015.
Don DeWitt, great-grandson of W.A. and Lucy Holt, will tell about his family’s role in the lumbering history of northern Oconto County at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27. He will also describe the rich Holt legacy, which includes the Cathedral Woods and preservation of the Depot Camp. He will share rare original footage of Holt operations filmed almost a hundred years ago by Lucy Holt, who owned the first moving picture camera in Oconto.
Tours of the logging camp led by camp manager Bob Brown and museum curator Kathleen Marsh will begin at 10 a.m. Guests making their first visit to the museum should allow at least one hour to experience the museum at the oldest logging camp in the U.S. sitting where it was originally built.
The museum is located on County Road F, a mile and a half east of Lakewood. Those coming into Lakewood on state Highway 32 should turn onto County F at the ATV trail head, then right on Country Club Lane. Parking is available in the McCauslin Brook Golf Course and Country Club lot. The museum is on McCauslin Brook, just behind the clubhouse.
