To the editor:
I am sure Pulaski Community School District would like to forget the past school year. Fight in March, illegal narcotics found in students’ cars on school grounds by Pulaski Police K-9 unit in April, Superintendent Thompson forced to resign in June with taxpayers on the hook for a substantial payout, David Shaw, teacher/coach, suspended for his part in the school fight, John Matczak, with three reprimands — one in 2010, 2011 and 2015, suspended and still working in the district (both should have been fired), and the Flex Mod debacle.
The district’s own dishonesty and lack of accountability continues.
In August 2015, PCSD filed for an emergency license with the Department of Public Instruction for a school counselor position. The district had to complete an application for the license along with a justification. This now-Pulaski counselor has only completed 11 credits of a 48-credit program, with graduation expected in 2018, at a salary of $47,500.
Why was this individual even interviewed? Job posting had a counselor license listed as a requirement. Was it because she was contacted by Pulaski school employee(s) to apply? Other candidates who applied were qualified, licensed and interviewed, but overlooked. This was done under direction of Interim Superintendent/Personnel Director Bec Kurzynske and the School Board.
Is this the type of unethical hiring practice common by the Pulaski Community School District administration? Parents/taxpayers should demand better as we continue to lose competent and qualified staff.
With loss of the iPad referendum in April 2015, the School Board approved all school administrators to cut 10 percent off their building budgets to move this program forward. What will be done when the roof at the middle school needs to be replaced in around a year at nearly $1 million dollars? Another referendum?
PCSD needs to look at themselves and their bad decisions affecting not only the students and parents, but the taxpayers. We need to demand accountability, loyalty and honesty just like they did with Superintendent Thompson.
