The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking public comment on the future management of the Langlade County segment of the Wolf River State Trail.
A master plan establishes the levels and types of resource management and public use permitted on DNR-managed properties. Under the master planning process, DNR staff will develop a property specific master plan for the Wolf River State Trail in Langlade County.
The full length of the Wolf River State Trail corridor extends 44 miles (north-south) on a former rail corridor from the Menominee and Langlade County line, north through Langlade County and into Forest County. The Forest County portion of the trail is managed in partnership with the county and was planned in the North Central Forest Regional Master Plan.
The second half of the trail runs through Langlade County and, until April 2026, had been managed in partnership with Langlade County. With the termination of the cooperative agreement with Langlade County, planning authority for the Wolf River State Trail returned to the DNR. An existing master plan authored by Langlade County in 2006 is the active plan for the trail.
On May 27, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approved the DNR’s request to initiate a master planning process for the Langlade County portion of the Wolf River State Trail to update the 2006 plan. Existing sections of the trail in Langlade County are used for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing (ungroomed), ATV/UTV riding, horseback riding and snowmobiling. All DNR lands are open to foot travel, unless posted as closed. Specific segments of the existing trail within the county limited different recreational uses.
Members of the public are invited to learn more about the Wolf River State Trail, become engaged in the DNR’s planning process and share their thoughts on the future use and management of DNR properties in the region by visiting the DNR’s Wolf River State Trail (Langlade County) Master Plan webpage, by attending the public meeting and open house hosted by the DNR, or both.
The public meeting will be held July 15 at the Antigo Public Library. DNR staff will give a short presentation at 6 p.m.
In addition to attending the public meeting to submit comments and questions, the public is encouraged to submit their input by mail, email, phone or through the DNR’s online survey form at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/fl/PropertyPlanning/WolfRiverStateTrail.
