Workshop looks at corn silage, pests

A workshop is being held March 26 to assist farm decision-making regarding corn pest management and corn silage management. Corn is grown on more acres in Wisconsin than any other crop. Corn silage forms the largest ration component on most Wisconsin dairy farms and is a particularly important crop in northeastern Wisconsin. The upcoming workshop will assist farmers as they make final plans for the 2025 production season. The workshop is sponsored by the Shawano County Forage Council, University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Program. The event will take place in the hog barn at Doc’s Harley-Davidson, W2709 state Highway 29, Bonduel. The program features corn disease and mycotoxin management; weed management; new corn silage forage quality testing procedures and loss reduction strategies; short stature corn’s fit as silage; and optimizing nutrient management, with an emphasis on NOPP results from northeast Wisconsin. At the conclusion of the program, a fundraising auction of donated ag items will be held by the Shawano County Forage Council. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with the educational program taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A full meal and all events are included in the $20 per person registration fee. Midwest Forage Association membership benefits will be discussed at the event but is not a prerequisite for attending. Certified Crop Advisor CEUs will be available.
