The Gillett School Board has authorized the sale of a strip of land to the state Department of Transportation for the reconstruction of state Highway 22.
The DOT is planning to rebuild 1.08 miles of Highway 22 through the city in 2026 between Finnegan Lake Road and the intersection with state Highway 32. The agency offered $6,900 to the school district.
“We got a proposal back from DOT on the purchase of the property that’s going to run along the edge of the school for the road project,” Superintendent Nathan Hanson told the board Feb. 20.
“We have to do a little bit more investigating, because the way the deed is written we’re not entirely sure, we may need to get more people involved,” Hanson said.
The board authorized Hanson to sign off on the offer once the details are ironed out.
The road work includes new pavement, sidewalks, and curb and gutter, along with multiple intersection improvements. A detour is planned using County Roads R and H and Highway 32, although access to property owners and businesses in the work zone will be maintained.
Final plans are expected to be completed this summer with the state work done in the spring and summer of 2026. The city is planning preparatory utility work this year.
