A pair of area school districts will have primary elections Feb. 18, and all voters will have a chance to narrow the list of candidates competing to be the state superintendent of public instruction.
In the Menominee Indian School District, residents are asked to vote for one candidate among the four who are running. The top two will advance to the April 1 general election to compete for a three-year term.
Candidates are Miriam Wepackespiw Waupoose, Gary Pywasay, McKaylin Peters and Carrie Waukau-Grignon.
Residents in the towns of Belle Plaine, Pella and Navarino will vote for up to two candidates for the Clintonville School District at-large seat.
Candidates are Patrick Huss, Laurie Vollrath, Marie Vandeberg, Tanya Hepp-Netrefa, Mark Zachow, David Battenberg and Christopher Hoffmann.
Jill Underly is running for another term as the state school leader. She is opposed by Jeff Wright and Brittany Kinser.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 18, or voters may contact their municipal clerk for an absentee ballot or to cast an absentee ballot in person.
The deadline for submitting an absentee ballot application is Feb. 13, and the last day to vote an absentee ballot in the clerk’s office is 5 p.m. Feb. 14. By state law, no in-person absentee voting may occur on the day before the election.
The municipal clerk will deliver voted absentee ballots returned on or before Election Day to the proper polling place or counting location before the polls close on Feb. 18. Any ballots received after the polls close will not be counted.
