Info meeting planned on ‘Farewell, WMS’ project

The Washington Middle School English Language Arts Department is making plans for the community to say goodbye to the old school as the school district prepares to open the new Oconto Falls Middle School this fall. Teacher Ashley Maederer said the department is working on “a project-based learning opportunity for our students.” An informational meeting has been scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon Feb. 6 to gain support from local historians and retired WMS staff. “We plan to have our community partners schedule time to visit our classrooms later in the spring to share their background and WMS stories with the students,” Maederer said. “In May, we will host ‘Farewell, WMS,’ a presentation of learning event for the community to see student work and have personal closure with WMS.” Parts of the old middle school were built more than a century ago when the building was Oconto Falls High School. The community passed a $37.6 million referendum in November 2022 that included funding for the new structure, which is being built on County Road I across from the current high school.
