Rec center closes briefly due to glitches from cold

The Shawano Recreation Center had to shut down briefly after equipment problems attributed to the extreme cold that blanketed Wisconsin last week. Officials posted Jan. 20 on Facebook that the air handler was struggling to keep up with the demand for hot air, and a boiler was out of service. Fixes were on the way, according to the post, although it would take time for parts to arrive. On Jan. 21, the recreation center’s Facebook page announced it would be closing due to the issues, noting that the pool temperature had dropped below 80 degrees. The normal temperature for the pool is 86 degrees. The gym area reopened Jan. 24, and the pool was scheduled to reopen Jan. 28, although the temperature was only 83 degrees. Officials reported that the pool temperature would be posted at the desk until it had returned to normal.
