A status conference has been postponed until Feb. 17 in the case of a Gillett man who was arrested Oct. 28 in Arkansas after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal ATV accident in Oconto County.
At the request of his defense attorney, a competency exam had been ordered for Obilio Tomas Sargento Roblero, 32, but the psychologist had trouble contacting the jail for an appointment, according to court documents. Once she was able to meet Roblero on Jan. 10, he insisted that she talk with his attorney first.
Oconto County Judge Jay Conley asked the defense attorney and jail staff to work together to make the examination happen. The status conference set for Jan. 9 had already been rescheduled.
The crash occurred around 7 p.m. Oct. 25 on Shawano Line Road at Nelson Road in the Town of Gillett and took the life of Thomas Roberts, 60, of Green Bay.
According to the criminal complaint, Roberts had stopped to help two other people whose UTV had broken down along the road. Witnesses said he hooked up the disabled vehicle with a tow strap and had just climbed back into his own ATV when Roblero’s SUV struck him.
Robrelo fled the scene on foot after the crash, the complaint said. Deputies conducted an extensive search of the area, including the suspect’s home in Gillett and the dairy farm where he worked but were unable to locate him that night.
It was later learned that he called his wife the next morning and told her he was on his way back to Mexico and that she should also leave the country, according to the complaint, but she told him she wanted to stay in Gillett.
Robrelo was located and arrested at a hotel in Jacksonville, Arkansas, and brought back to Oconto County, where he remains jailed in lieu of $1 million cash bond.
