SRO officer pilot advances

The City of Gillett and Gillett School District are moving closer to establishing a school resource officer (SRO) to serve in school buildings. The city’s Health, Protection and Licensing Committee was scheduled to meet Dec. 9 to make a final recommendation regarding a contract to establish a pilot SRO program for the first five months of 2025. Alderperson Ashley VanStraten said the HPL Committee met Dec. 4 and postponed a decision. “We had some council members request that our lawyers look over the contract one final time before taking any action,” VanStraten said. The Dec. 9 meeting was expected to address outstanding concerns, she said. “With our answer on Monday, we want to make sure the school board has enough time to review it at their next board meeting, which is Dec. 19,” VanStraten said. “If it gets moved through, we could have our officer and start that relationship on Jan. 2.” wbluhm@newmedia-wi.com
