A Gillett man’s effort to have the city erect banners honoring local veterans on light poles is bearing fruit.
Michael Kohn appeared Oct. 3 before the Gillett City Council to update progress and ask for the council to put the matter to a formal vote at its November meeting.
Kohn proposes to post banners bearing the names and photos of people who have served, including their military branch, similar to programs that are done in Oconto, Shawano, Seymour and other communities.
“I think it would be a very appropriate way for us to honor veterans,” Kohn said.
He asked the city for the appropriate size and dimensions and said the city could use the hardware that held the former ATV Capital of the World banners that once hung on power poles around Gillett. The city has since rebranded as A City for All Seasons.
Utility Operator Ron Anderson told Kohn he would send the dimensions to him, and he confirmed that the hardware is still in-house.
The state Department of Transportation has informed the city that banners cannot be posted along state Highway 22, which runs through town as McKenzie Street and West Main Street, and WE Energies, the city’s electric utility, has expressed reluctance for the city to use its poles. Anderson said other alternatives could be considered.
The council also urged him to work with the new Gillett Area Chamber of Commerce, and Kohn said he had already been working with chamber President Chris Byars.
