Local area poet Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes is sponsoring a workshop for middle school and high school ages youth to help them prepare to enter their artwork and poetry in the contest sponsored by the Machickanee Players.
Information about the contest is available at all the libraries in Oconto County. Contestants are invited to create artwork, poems, or a fiction piece related to a favorite poem or poet. Books and related materials will be available at the workshop to inspire participants with examples of poetry and art. Deadline for submitting work is Oct. 1, submitted to machickaneeplayers.theatre@gmail.com
Saffioti-Hughes will be working with teens at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Suring Area Public Library, 604 Main St., Suring. There will be examples of such poets as Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, Shel Silverstein and others. Materials including paper and samples to draw from will be provided. All participants need is a pencil or pen.
A retired professor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Saffioti-Hughes has been a librarian as well. Three-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize for Poetry in consecutive years, she is a member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets and other arts organizations. “When Wilding Returns,” her most recent book of poetry, is available at local libraries, Amazon and Barnes and Noble online.
