To the editor:
This letter is to clarify what was said to the Oconto County Times Herald regarding the release of Public Works Department head Tim Christensen. In the article dated March 4, 2015, entitled “Gillett dismisses its public works director,” it was written that Mr. Christensen was released after “learning of the unfunded pension obligation of $40,000.”
This statement was made in error. This finding had no implication as to why Mr. Christensen was released. This finding does not play a role on the city’s budget. Mr. Christensen was released solely due to budget constraints.
As for the $40,000 in unfunded pension obligation, this figure was looked into by Clerk (Beth) Rank.
The city does not have a $40,000 unfunded pension obligation debt with WRS (Wisconsin Retirement System). The city has a $7,858 unfunded pension liability with WRS. This liability is being repaid on a monthly basis by the city.
Hopefully this clears up any concerns regarding the WRS debt the city has and the release of Mr. Christensen.
