Shawano County authorities said in a Facebook posting Thursday that a man was found dead in the wreckage of a house fire in Green Valley.
The name and age of the man were not provided.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department kept Facebook readers apprised of the fire for most of the day Thursday, but no news release was issued by press time and no officers were available to comment.
Firefighters responded to the fire on Town Line Road in Green Valley, just west of Krakow, shortly after 6 a.m.
The house was a “total loss,” according to the sheriff’s office, in one its social media postings.
The initial Facebook posting from Sheriff Adam Bieber stated authorities believed that one single man lived at the residence.
“That male has not been located and contact has not been made,” Bieber wrote. “Fire crews have not been able to access the home to search for possible victims.”
Green Valley and Cecil fire departments responded to the fire.
One Facebook reader commenting on the sheriff’s department’s original posting wrote that she heard the missing man was at a neighbors’s home at the time, raising hopes that he survived the blaze.
The sheriff’s department posted an update on Facebook two hours later, about 5:30 p.m., stating that the missing man was found deceased in the fire.
The department said a news release was being prepared, but it was not received by press time.
