Administrative changes for the charter schools in Gillett were formalized by the School Board on Thursday.
The board extended Gillett Secondary School Principal Steve Linssen’s contract to oversee the district’s charter schools for the 2014-15 school year.
The district in 2011 opened two charter schools. Cre8, offering an art-infused curriculum, opened at the elementary school for grades 2-5, and GOAL, Gillett’s Occupation and Leadership Academy with an emphasis on career readiness, opened at the secondary school for grades 6 to 12.
For the past two years, the district contracted with Gary Kohl, who served as charter administrator and information technology specialist. His contract expired in June, and the district did not renew it.
In September, Linssen assumed the charter school administrator duties.
“We’re trying to get to more of a district program,” Superintendent Todd Carlson said.
Expanded roles were also approved for two charter school teachers. Ray Johnson was named charter school teacher coordinator, and Preston Zimmerman was named Career Pathways coordinator.
Johnson will develop GOAL curriculum, organize open houses, work with parents and build community relationships.
Zimmerman will direct students toward their career goals.
“It’s trying to move students from high school to work,” said Carlson, describing Career Pathways.
Compensation for the positions has not been set. In January or February the district will look at the number of hours used for the positions and determine compensation accordingly, Linssen said.
Thirty-four full-time students are enrolled in the GOAL charter program for the 2014-15 school year, but the Cre8 charter has none.
“The Cre8 charter is still open, but we did not have enough students in-house to run it this year,” Linssen explained.
