To the editor:
I have decided to run as a write-in candidate for the sheriff of Shawano County.
Why have my family and I decided to do this write-in effort? Primarily, because I feel that I am the best qualified to be the sheriff of Shawano County. Secondarily, because numerous people have contacted us from around the county saying that they did not vote in the election because they assumed that I would win the primary.
After listening to the concerns of these people and many others, I have been convinced to run as a write-in candidate.
I feel that after decades of service to the taxpayers of Shawano County, I need to allow all of the voters in the county the opportunity to vote for the person who they feel is the best qualified to protect and serve them. I feel that person is me.
In order to get the word out, my family and I decided to set up a booth at the Shawano County Fair. Our booth happened to be across from the Republican Party booth. Someone from one of the parties stopped by to discuss my candidacy. They forcibly explained that I should not do this, and that at my age I should just retire. This is an example of partisan politics, which does not have a place in whom the taxpayers of Shawano County choose to be their sheriff.
I was appalled that I would be told not to run because of my age. What is wrong with someone with almost four decades of dedicated police service wanting to run for an additional term as sheriff? This person implied that the issue was youth and enthusiasm versus decades of calm, compassionate, selfless service to the taxpayers. They implied that the old guy (me) should just go away.
During my decades of service, I have always followed the credo of protect and serve. I feel it is the duty of the Sheriff’s Department, along with our law enforcement partners from other agencies throughout Shawano County, to provide protection to the taxpayers. I have never felt that it is your responsibility to protect yourself, as candidate Bieber has stated.
As the sheriff of Shawano County, I have always collaborated with other agencies in order to provide the best law enforcement that your tax dollars can afford.
If you agree that it is the responsibility of law enforcement to protect and serve you, and if you feel that law enforcement should do more than just “pick up your dead body,” as candidate Bieber has stated, then I need your support.
