Letter: Comments about homeless are embarrassing

To the editor: I was ashamed at comments that were reportedly made at the recent City Council meeting when a homeless shelter proposal was debated — referring to those who are homeless as “those people” and stating that homelessness is a “chosen form of life.” Many who are homeless are also living with mental illness of some type. Do people really think that one chooses to have mental illness? Get real, people. There are homeless folks in Shawano now. You might not think so, but I suggest you believe that way because you choose to give a blind eye to the problems real citizens are experiencing. I hope that Matthew 25 can respond to the concerns presented by the council members so that the shelter can come to fruition. In the meantime, I know one Shawano business that I’ll be boycotting.
