To the editor:
The Clintonville Chamber of Commerce recently sent out a notice soliciting donations for the flower baskets on Main Street. I applaud the private sector’s initiative to step up to ease the budget burden on taxpayers.
The chamber cites the disappointing decision made by the council but does note it had to make the cut. Please keep in mind that our budget deficit this year is suffering from a decision made on last year’s budget to not meet the state’s spending limits. Thus, this year, because we are meeting the spending limits, Clintonville will receive a $100,000 credit. Since this did not happen last year, the deficit this year is nearly $150,000 instead of under $50,000.
No citizens have come forward to suggest ways to cut the budget. Yet, at each meeting the council hears pleas to save various projects.
No one wanted to eliminate the flower baskets. But it was one thing that was not a necessity, like police and fire.
I hope the individuals who are heading the flower effort will consider funding other projects and activities that could save the city money.
