Leslie ‘Swede’ Larson, 90, Eland, died on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at his home under the care of his family and Ministry Hospice. He was born on Sept. 28, 1922, in Eland, the son of the late Louis and Jessie (Nichols) Larson.
On April 26, 1949, Swede was united in marriage to Susan Szutkowski at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Birnamwood. She survives. Swede was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II.
Swede held many jobs, including a milk route, mail route and school bus driver, and the couple owned and operated Larson’s Supermarket, Eland, until 1992. He was an active resident of the village of Eland, serving as fire chief, constable and village trustee for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; two children, Pat (Dennis) Hartleben, Eland, and Les (Denise) Larson, Eland; grandchildren, Cory (Gina) Haupt, Kim Gordon, Shane (Kendra) Larson, Ashley (Brandon) Groshek and Hillary Larson; great-grandchildren, Anna, James, Drew, Blakely and Jaxton; and one sister, Dolores ‘Sis’ (George) Smith, Birnamwood.
Swede was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Susan, and a brother, Robert.
Visitation for Swede will be held from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at the Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. Military rites will be conducted by the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post 502 at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
