John S. Granchay

John Steven Granchay, 60, of Shawano, died on Thursday, May 28, 2015, in Appleton. John was born on Oct. 28, 1954, in Weirton, West Virginia, to the late Richard and Jeanette (Rzepka) Granchay. He graduated from Madonna High School in 1972 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University. John worked as a social worker and was an honorary life member and past president of Wisconsin Social Services Association. He was a substitute teacher, an active member of Ducks Unlimited, a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the booster club. He served on the Shawano School Board and was dedicated to assisting the community. John was the seventh-grade boys basketball coach at Franklin Middle School for many years. He was also the basketball coach at Denmark and Shawano Community High School. John is survived by one aunt, Alice Rzepka Hammett, of Florida, and his cousins, Delia (John) Egan, of West Virginia, Cheryl (Sean) Crain, of Maryland, William J. (Sharon) Rzepka, of Kentucky, and Joseph (Lora) Rzepka, of Maryland. He is further survived by numerous friends from the Shawano area community. John was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Mildred and John Rzepka, and one uncle, Joseph Rzepka. A memorial service for John will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating.
