There is something about the month of April that seems to cause it to fly past without noticing. Of course, last year, spring didn’t come quite as early, but this year, with mainly warm weather, it is astounding how quickly the days go by.
My time seems to be partly taken up with going to Tigerton High School softball games. I really never realized how much I missed going to softball games in between the times my daughter and my granddaughter played. Win or lose, it is fun to be outside cheering for the team.
Dressing for the games is a last-minute decision. Last year, it was cold all but the last two games of the season. I can remember bundling up in a sweatshirt, a hooded sweatshirt over that, plus a winter coat over that. Then sometimes I had to wrap in a blanket besides. So far this year, other than the game in Almond, a sweatshirt, with the hooded one over that, has been comfortable.
Sitting is another matter. I had a nice bleacher seat, one that unfolded, with a hook to anchor it to the bleacher, a cushy seat and a stable backrest. Somehow, I must have left it at the Gresham game. I know I carried it to the van, set it down, but then went to talk to someone and must have not gotten it into the van. I went to a sporting goods store in Wausau to try to replace it, but the ones they had there were not so sturdy, or cushy.
In other words, sitting in the bleachers is getting to be a pain in the you know what, or precisely for me, a pain in my left hip. Much of the pain I have been having in my knees, hips and back is coming from the arthritis in my right foot, which has plagued me for more than 25 years. It has gotten to the point that if I don’t have it corrected, it will cause me to have knee and hip replacements that probably won’t help a great deal, because they are not the problem.
So, in June, I am having my right foot fused. I am told that once I am healed, the pain should go away. The drawback is the healing is a long process: eight weeks of nonweight bearing and four more weeks in a boot. I put the surgery off until after the high school softball season is over because I didn’t want to miss any of the games if possible.
Now, my challenge is to try to find a comfortable way to sit and enjoy them. Yesterday, I stood for a good share of the game, snapping a few pictures by putting the lens of the camera through a hole in the chain link fence. Regardless, I will find a way.
Of course, sitting anywhere for a length of time is a problem, being on my feet too long is a problem, and sleeping too long also gives me a backache. Right now, I am fine as long as I don’t sit, stand or sleep.
Another problem on its way to getting fixed is the wall in my bathroom. A moisture problem caused it to turn black near the shower head. Dry wall is being replaced with blue wall. I will be getting a new shower head, plus, some safety bars will be going up for me to hang on to.
One by one, the days fly past. I try to keep as active as possible, to stay in shape, and to stay busy, no problem on that score lately it seems.
