BASEBALL Oconto Falls 8 Coleman 3 Senior Riley Gruetzmacher batted 4 for 4 with a team-leading 3 RBIs in the Panthers’ nonconference win Saturday at Coleman. Gruetzmacher’s single scored Mike Manns (1-4, double, two RBIs, two runs) in the first inning. In the fifth, Gruetzmacher hit a two-run home run that scored Manns and gave Falls (2-4, 0-4 Bay Conference) a 5-2 lead. Wesley Brabandt shut out Coleman (9-2, 5-1) the final three innings, allowing two hits, in relief of starter Connor Sefcik. Sefcik pitched four innings, struck out two, allowed two earned runs and issued four walks. Menasha 4 Oconto Falls 1 A three-run first inning by visiting Menasha was the downfall Thursday for Oconto Falls. Panthers’ starter Riley Gruetzmacher walked the first two batters. An error also contributed to Menasha’s rally. Gruetzmacher went five innings, struck out seven, allowed five walks and gave up three earned runs on two hits. Evan Sigmund produced a scoreless two innings in relief of Gruetzmacher, striking out three and allowing one hit and no walks. Brett Ash (1-3, stolen base) provided a RBI single in the third inning, scoring Mike Manns. Oconto Falls (1-4, 0-4 Bay Conference) was held to three hits against Menasha (1-4, 1-2 Bay). Winning pitcher Chris Van Handel struck out eight, issued three walks and allowed one earned run. SOFTBALL Crivitz 7 STAA/Lena 6 Marley Carviou’s 15 strikeouts were not enough as St. Thomas Aquinas Academy/Lena lost a Marinette & Oconto Conference game Thursday at home. Carviou allowed four earned runs on five hits through seven innings. She also walked six. On offense, Carviou was 2 for 4 with a team-leading 3 RBIs and a double for STAA/Lena (2-4, 0-4 M&O). Millie Benson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a triple. Crivitz (6-1, 3-1 M&O) was led by Amanda Pickett, who batted 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. She was also the winning pitcher, striking out nine batters, allowing six runs (one earned) on seven hits and issuing three walks.
