Shawano placed third out of more than 30 teams at its home wrestling invite on Jan. 26.
“They did a great job battling tonight,” coach Mike Homan said. “Most brackets had 16 girls in them. It was good just to place in the top eight. We had all girls but one finish in the top eight. The girls really battled hard tonight.”
Onna Hermann placed second. Caitlyn Moede, Courtney Schenk and Lily Tomas all placed third. Maddie Moesch took fifth, and Adalyn Barkley finished in sixth place.
“Maddie did a great job to place fifth,”, Homan said. “Onna wrestled well in her finals match and just came up short to a tough opponent. Caitlyn did well to place third in a tough bracket. Adalyn continues to improve and get better with each match. Her sixth-place finish was a good improvement.
“Courtney lost a match in round two that she should have won, but she kept on advancing, and in the third-place match, she wrestled a state tournament champion from Bayport and came away with a fall in the first period. Lily Tomas did a great job placing third as she continues to improve and learn.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood placed 12th.
Brooke Huffman finished in first in her class, and Brenna Marsh placed fifth in hers. Megan Bresnahan went 0-2.
Shawano 18, Green Bay United 0
There were not enough matches for a full dual, but for the Shawano girls who did wrestle, they came out on top 18-0 over Green Bay United at Green Bay West on Jan. 25.
Jenna Moede started off with a pin.
“She took a nice single leg attack and then found a tight half-nelson early into the first period,” coach Mike Homan said.
Caitlyn Moede wrestled two matches. She won both of them by fall.
“She continues to do a great job and works hard in practice,” Homan said. “Caitlyn is wrestling well as we move into the end of the season.”
Adalyn Barkley at 138 also had two matches and earned one decision and one fall.
“She has just started wrestling this year and continues to improve all of the time,” the coach said. “She keeps getting better and works to improve her skills. We are excited to see what she can do in the future.”
