The Shawano Area Writers is inviting young writers living in Shawano and Menominee counties to take part in the 2015 George Putz Memorial Writing Contest.
The contest, named after a Shawano man who bequeathed the Shawano Area Writers $77,000 in his will, is open to students in grades 1-12. The contest received more than 230 entries in 2014.
“Stories have fueled the minds of people for centuries, and the Shawano Area Writers want to encourage the generations that come after us to use their imaginations and create brave new worlds that readers everywhere will want to escape to,” said Lee Pulaski, president of the Shawano Area Writers. “Who knows? We might have another J.K. Rowling or James Patterson in the making here in northeast Wisconsin.”
There are three contest age groups: grades 1-4, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12. The categories that each are fiction, nonfiction and poetry. A student may enter as many times as he or she wants, in any category, but each entry must have a separate entry form.
First-, second- and third-place winners in each group will be selected for each category. Cash prizes will be awarded in each category. The prize for grades 1-8 is $20 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third. In the high school division, the first place winner will receive $50, second place $25 and third place $15.
Judges may also pick honorable mentions in each category/ grade group.
Winning students will also receive a certificate of achievement.
