Wittenberg-Birnamwood 63, Peshtigo 23
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls basketball team started the season with plenty of adrenaline as they took on Peshtigo, defeating the Bulldogs 63-23.
“Defensively we played very well, especially the second half,” coach Nick Mechelke said. “We just didn’t shoot very well from the floor. We got a lot of open looks but couldn’t get anything to fall in the first half.”
The Chargers led 27-13 after the first half and made some adjustments in the second half to help blow open the scoring difference.
“We played a much better half, outscoring the Bulldogs 36-10,” Mechelke said. “I was really happy that all 12 contributed in some way tonight.”
Rory Salvesen led Wittenberg-Birnamwood with 25 points. Melaina Granquist added 14, and Harper Rogowski contributed 11. Salvesen and Granquist each had four free throws.
Brie Ladika had the Chargers’ only two assists. Rogowski had eight assists, and Granquist had seven.
Ladika, Rogowski, Salvesen and Granquist each recorded five steals.
Lena 60, Marinette 54
Eva Brooks posted 27 points, and Madilyn Thomson added 20 as Lena opened the season with a 60-54 win over Marinette.
Marinette led 26-22 at the break, but then Lena turned up the tempo and outscored their guests 38-28 to earn the six-point win.
Brooks collected 22 of her points in the second half. During the stretch of the entire game, she connected on a trio of 3-point plays and made 8-of-15 free throws.
Thomson made 8-of-11 free throws.
Also scoring were Kali Fischer with nine points, and Haley Van Ark and Maddy Kushner with two each.
