City of Gillett residents will pay $12 more for garbage and recyclable collection in 2016, as the city looks to cover its costs for pick-up.
The City Council on Thursday approved an annual fee of $90, up from $78 this year. With the change, the city projects it will collect $54,630 in 2016, compared with $47,346 in 2015.
“Where we’re at now will not cover our garbage pick-up,” said Alderperson Terry Nelson, chair of the board of public works committee. “By raising it to $90, it will be in the neighborhood to cover all expenses with our garbage.”
The council in June decided to contract with Great American Disposal for garbage and recyclable collection because of the cost of the service (the city spent $56,000 in 2013) and the age of the garbage truck. The city’s 15-year-old truck is past its life expectancy.
The city of Gillett will drop its recycling partnership with Oconto County and the town of Gillett on Jan. 1, when the city’s agreement with GAD begins. The council on Thursday also adopted resolutions that allow the city to be the “responsible unit” for recyclable collection.
The refuse fee will be included on the city’s portion of the property tax bill. Once the fee is paid, residents will receive 52 garbage stickers to attach to their bags.
